Why You Need a Migration Tool in 2022 and Probably Will in 2023 and Beyond

cloud-migration

Companies worldwide are migrating to the Cloud at a fantastic rate and you don’t need to take our word for it. Gartner, Inc. predicts that worldwide end-user spending on public Cloud services is expected to grow 20.4% in 2022 to total $494.7 billion, up from $410.9 billion in 2021. They also predict that in 2023, end-user spending will reach nearly $600 billion.

And if $80 billion-plus worth of growth predicted, year on year, isn’t impressive enough for you, then take a look at the accompanying search trend graphs for the keywords “cloud migration” and “migration tool” from Google Trends.

What we found most interesting was that the search trends for “migration tool” were higher than “cloud migration” itself before 2020 when Covid-19 struck and we suspect that this caused the slight decline and then recovery of that search term. As you can clearly see, searches for both keywords are still steadily on the rise indicating that there is a growing demand for both Cloud migrations and migration tools.

To say that data migrations can be tricky or can cause data loss or downtime or require a well-thought-out migration plan is probably an understatement. So it just makes sense that software development companies like us are looking to create tools to make migrations — and thus your work life — simpler and easier. Now, which self-respecting IT professional doesn’t like a good tool to help him save time, automate dull and mind-numbing tasks, and thus make the end users worship his genius?

Data Migrations Have a Hidden Trick to Them

Nowadays, there are various online tools available to assist IT professionals to migrate data “successfully”, but beware as not all data migration tools were created equally. One sneaky stinker that often gets overlooked is broken file links within documents. If the migration software that you picked for the job doesn’t make provision for this one little point, you could be spending days, weeks, or even months trying to fix your broken links after a migration.

As long as companies have files with links in them, this issue with broken file links after a data migration will most likely persist, and who wants to manually go through 100,000-plus files to fix links one by one? No one! And being the clever IT professional that you are, you might think that this problem could be easily solved by a simple find-and-replace script, but more than a quarter of a century’s experience in fixing all sorts of file links has shown us that this plan seldomly pans out the way one might have hoped. What seems to be a simple solution in concept, can easily turn into hours and days grinding away at getting your script to do what you want, only to realize later that you should have just trusted the experts in the first place, and saved yourself all this grief.
